Air9r,

can't wait to race it again this year. You are obviously putting a lot work into this course and since last year was great, I can only imagine how great it will be this year.

Image Henry and Ben Domnarski join the Union of MTB Bridge Construction Workers and finish up the job of nailing shingles to a beam that will span the unrideable mud after Fox Hill. Its narrow but if you are good, you can balance and ride the whole span. Otherwise you can run and at least make it across.

I drove more stakes and then secured them with wood screws so the beam bridges would not move or rotate like they did to some last year.

FYI from one of my horse boarders. The local sportman's club is having a 3D archery shoot. It doesn't really present a big danger to riders but is good to know about:

This is what's going on at the gun club on June 13 & 14. The signs I saw warning people about entering the conservation area were at the blue gate on Bacon and on the trail that cuts down from Captain Kidd's Rock back down to Bacon Rd. (8.8mm thru the 9.5mm on both Pro and Beginner Loops) I would imagine there must be one further up Tavern Road toward the farm too but I didn't go that far today. (There is another sign...about the 8.8mm but that Road is actually St. John's Road)

It looks like they're expecting a lot of people since they are planning on bringing in vendors and help for parking cars and such. Even if the people weren't scary to horses, I can't imagine what they'd think about coming across a giraffe in the woods, (check out the link). Anyway, I thought you might want to warn anyone that might be trailering in to ride on that weekend that they should probably take a right on the main trail.

Question...a friend and I are planning/hoping to ride the 10mile/sport loop on Friday July 3rd...in the AM. I did this race last year, but as a beginner, so I never saw the full loop, and thus don't know it. Would the markers be likely to be up by then, or would others(who know the course) be riding it?
Can you let me know what our options are? for making a successful recon ride : )
I've heard from others it's a tough loop(on bike and rider) and deserving of a pre-ride!!
Thanks! Ken

I'll always have enough markers from now until race time for everyone to do the short or full loop so you can pre-ride anytime.

The only real difference is that I go crazy with the yellow caution tape on Sat. July 4th so that racers CAN'T get off course at full tilt. I never liked racing and having to make split second decisions on which way to go. Friday you will have no problem seeing the full loop but you may have to ease up on a few intersections just to make sure.

I'd love to put the yellow tape out two days early but since the property is shared, it makes me too vulnerable to vandalism...which unfortunately happens. Even last year some of my caution markers were stolen before I pick them up just after sunrise the following day.

A buddy and I will be headed up tomorrow early afternoon to get a first-hand look at the course. Any tips to navigating other than what has been said in the earlier conversation?

Good forecast for this weekend. At least with all this rain, Sunday is supposed to be sunny and 75 degrees. I guess if Mother Nature is only going to give us one good day at least she is kind enough to make it race day. I rode the course this morning in the rain and its not bad. There are puddles but you can find a line around all but a few. The hardest part of this course when its not dry is getting grip on some of the steep climbs. I expect it to drain out and dry out a bit before race time, making it much like it was last year.

Tip: If you have a choice, bring the more durable gear. I ride big 2.2 aggressive tires with higher than normal pressures. You are better to ride smooth and clean then to try and bully this course! Haste makes waste!

Same marking tips. Had a half dozen pre-riders today. I've had several calls about pre-riding for tomorrow and Saturday so you may be able to ride with others if you like. I'll open the gate for the race parking. Feel free to hose your bike off at the barn after you ride.

Matt

Fun course, I could have done with a few less mud holes though...
